About Dr.Whitaker

Melissa is a family nurse practitioner who is passionate about promoting vibrant health in patients and about using an integrative approach to help patients reach their goals. She helps patients formulate a plan that will empower them to optimize their health by assessing patients using advanced diagnostics, symptoms, and history. She uses nutrition and supplements as an integral part of treating and preventing chronic diseases of inflammation and in medication reduction.

Melissa was a national champion rower at the University of Michigan and competed in England after winning the gold at Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia and trained with the Olympic team.  At the end of her training, she sustained two herniated discs. She opted for conservative treatment and acupuncture, which enabled her to avoid spinal fusion surgery. Melissa graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan with a BS concentration in environmental science, biology; and education; she then graduated from the BSN program at the University of Maryland with honors.

After 5 years at John Hopkins Hospital, she returned to the University of Maryland to complete the Master’s Program in Family Practice. She has completed advanced coursework at the Institute for Functional Medicine. She enjoys hiking with her dog and husband, reading, gardening, swimming and rowing on the Severn Rivers, and biking.
