Medical Cannabis

Medical Cannabis

Cannabis has been used to treat a variety of health conditions for hundreds of years. In recent years, we have made great advancements in what is known as “Western Medicine”. Unfortunately, a divide has been growing between “Western Medicine” and “Eastern Medicine”. At Integrative Family Medicine we hope to bridge this gap and combine both of these practices to work with each patient individually, providing personalized care. For many patients, this will include a discussion on the use of medical cannabis.

The use of medical cannabis can be a confusing topic because the laws surrounding its use vary between states. Luckily, in Maryland, these laws support a patient’s access to this natural treatment for many conditions. These conditions include, but are not limited to, chronic pain, severe pain, muscle spasms, cancer, anorexia, seizures, glaucoma, ptsd, and insomnia. When you meet with one of our providers, we will work closely with you to determine if medical cannabis is an appropriate treatment plan. This may include the use of medical cannabis on its own or in-conjunction with other medications or treatments.

In order to receive a medical cannabis license, you will need to register with the Maryland Cannabis Commission. You can do this online by submitting your name and photo ID which will be processed and added to the registry. You will be provided an ID number. After this, you can meet with one of our providers who will determine if you are eligible for a medical cannabis license and complete the necessary authorizations so that you may purchase medical cannabis to support a healthy lifestyle. This prescription will remain in your online portal as long as you complete at least one in-person appointment with a provider annually. We will recommend several health stores in the area that specialize in medical cannabis and they will be able to work with you to determine which strand (type) of cannabis is right for you.
